For keen historians and curious minds, the area is steeped in history from Norman lords to Tudor ironmasters, poets, and rebels. Visit sites dating back to the Norman conquest, as well as several moats with the most famous examples being Bodiam Castle, Herstmonceux Castle and Michelham Priory House & Gardens.

The region is proud of its horticulture and known for its fertile soil, boasting stunning gardens all year round.

Groombridge Castle – a moated medieval manor – said to be haunted by a lady in white.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden – Created by Vita Sackville-West, this world-famous garden features intimate garden rooms, climbing roses, and spectacular borders.

Scotney Castle – A romantic moated castle surrounded by picturesque gardens and woodland walks. A treat to visit in spring and early summer when the rhododenrons and azealeas are in bloom.

Pashley Manor – A quintessential English garden with tulip displays, herbaceous borders, and stunning sculpture trails.

Penshurst Place – Immaculate Elizabethan gardens with orchards, herb gardens, and sweeping parkland.

Hever Castle & Leeds Castle – Both boast stunning formal gardens, lakes, and topiary mazes, perfect for a day of exploration, and check their calendars for seasonal events throughout the year.
